Sierra Leone

The Facts:

Located in western Africa on the Atlantic coast, Sierra Leone is among the poorest countries in the world. The capital of Freetown was established as a refuge for former slaves in 1792.

The Reality:

Today, the six million people of Sierra Leone are struggling to recover from a brutal civil war that decimated their country for over a decade. The mass migration of returning refugees after the war has placed huge demands on the weak infrastructure of the country, resulting in greatly reduced access to clean water. Even the largest hospital in the country frequently is without running water.

The Solution:

Water to Thrive is responding to the water crisis in Sierra Leone with 10 new projects to bring clean water to desperately poor communities. These projects will transform the lives of 5,500 people with a holistic approach that improves health and economic conditions. Not only will they have clean water to drink, the villagers will have a source of water for irrigating their crops and will be better able to feed their families.
