Ethiopia
The Facts:
Ethiopia is a landlocked country in the eastern Horn of Africa and is one of the five poorest countries in the world. Conditions in this beautiful but impoverished nation are dire.
- Over half of the 85 million population has no access to clean water.
- One in ten Ethiopian children dies before his 5th birthday because of a waterborne disease.
- At any given time, 50 percent of the rural population is suffering from a water-related illness.
The Reality:
Women and girls bear the brunt of the water crisis, because it’s considered their duty to collect water for their families. The average walk for water in rural Ethiopia is five hours a day. This means many girls are unable to attend school and miss the opportunity of an education, their best hope of escaping poverty.
The Solution:
Many rural villages are sitting right on top of a water source, but the people have no resources to access it. Water to Thrive’s hand-dug wells cost on average $5,000 – just $10.00 per person to provide clean water for an entire generation. A well changes everything. Illness is replaced with health; despair with hope. Help us break this cycle of poverty. Help us help Ethiopia.
